Binaural Beats for the Technical Dummy

July 20th, 2011

binaural beatsAll this talk about binaural beats. Just exactly what are binaural beats? Let’s explore this in three steps. First, we’ll talk about what sound really is. Then we’ll define frequency. And lastly, we’ll use these two definitions to explain specifically what binaural beats are.

Back to Basics – What is Sound?

Here’s my definition: Sound is the sensation our brain creates (and we “hear”) when vibrations in the air cause our eardrum to move or vibrate.

We are surrounded by air – although we don’t usually realize it except when the wind blows. But wind is a large and relatively slow movement – like the current in a stream. Sound is also the movement of air – but much smaller and faster movements – like the ripples on a pond.

So, what exactly is sound? When we strike a drum, for instance, the head of the drum gets pushed in. Then, because it’s kind of elastic, it springs back. But it doesn’t stop where it was. Because it has mass it keeps moving and pushes out (just like a swing continues to move back and forth after it’s pushed). Then, the drum head elastically snaps back and continues until it pushes back in. And so on – it continues to vibrate back and forth until it runs out of energy. We see this motion as vibration because it happens hundreds of times a second.

That’s how sound is created – because each time the drum head pushes out, it pushes the air in front of it. Then that air pushes the air between you and the drum until the air around your ear pushes your eardrum in. When the drum head snaps back into the drum, it sucks in the air around it. And that vacuum propagates through the air and sucks your eardrum outward. So, the drum head moving back and forth pushes the air between you and the drum back and forth very rapidly which pushes your eardrum back and forth very rapidly. When your brain senses your eardrum moving, it translates those motions into the sensation we know as sound. So it’s all about air moving back and forth – and that’s why there’s no sound in space. No air – no sound.

What is Frequency? – The Speed of Sound

Frequency is simply how fast those sound vibrations occur. If the drum head vibrates 100 times per second it has a lower frequency than another drum head that vibrates at 150 times a second. We hear higher frequencies as higher pitch notes. So a thin string on a guitar produces a higher pitch or tone than a fat string because it weighs less so it can move back and forth faster (and therefore pushes air back and forth faster). And if we fret a string, we shorten the string and the pitch gets higher. A shorter string weighs less than a longer string (less mass) so, once again, it vibrates faster.

What are Binaural Beats? (FINALLY!)

binaural beatsLet’s go back to our drum example – only this time, we’ll be greedy and use two drums. If the drums vibrate at exactly the same frequency and if they vibrate together; the sound will be twice as loud. In other words, both drums will push out at the same time so that the air that pushes our eardrum will be twice as strong and then both drums sucking will tug at our eardrums with twice as much force.

However, if we hit one drum just a fraction of an instant after the other, one drum head will be pushing out while the other is pulling in.  One drum would be pushing on the air while the other pulls on the same air – so the air won’t move. In a perfectly theoretical world, the sounds would cancel. In fact that’s how those new-fangled noise-cancellation earphones work. They sense the sounds around you and then pump “opposite” sounds into the earphones to cancel the noise.

Now, what if the two drums had slightly different frequencies? When one drum head pushes out, the other (because it is slower) pushes out just a little bit after it. So the sound you get is stronger than from one drum but not quite as strong as the two of them pushing air exactly together.

The next time the heads push out, the second head falls a little farther behind and the sound gets a little weaker. If the second drum falls just a little more behind each time, eventually the second drum will be pulling in as the first pushes out and the sound will be very much diminished. Then, as the second drum continues to fall behind each cycle, they will eventually sync up again and will push out together – essentially doubling the power of the sound.

You can see that as the slower drum perpetually falls behind the faster drum, the sound intensity will cycle and get weaker as the “pushes” and “pulls” line up and stronger as the “pushes” and “pushes” (or “pulls” and “pulls”) add to each other.

This is what a binaural beat is. It is when two sounds differ by a small frequency, they create a pulsing known as a beat frequency. These beat frequencies or binaural beats are caused by the signals periodically adding to each other and cancelling each other.

Now, I’ve used drums to explain binaural beats because it’s easy to imagine drum heads pushing and pulling air and interacting with our ear drums. In reality, the binaural beats that we use to alter our mental states are created electronically – and with greater precision – by computers and sophisticated audio software. And the mixing of the two signals happens inside our heads (when we listen with headphones) – not in the open air. But the principles remain the same.

What are Binaural Beats Used For?

Binaural beats can help you put your brain into a specific mind-state. Do you need to be energized? More alert? More focused? Or do you need to be more relaxed or in a meditative state of mind? Maybe you need to be in a learning frame of mind. Or do you need help falling asleep? Each of these situations requires its own specific optimal state of mind.

We already know this. If you are energized, excited or stressed; you will have difficulty relaxing or falling asleep or studying. If you are daydreaming, you are going to have trouble studying or learning something new. Every activity has an optimal mental state of mind associated with it.

Binuaral BeatsThe interesting thing is that our state of mind is controlled by our brainwave frequencies. When we are active and alert, our brain waves operate at higher frequencies. When we are relaxed and calm, our brains operate at lower frequencies. So, we can control our state of mind by controlling our brainwave frequency.

That’s where binaural beats come in. As I explained earlier, when we present a different frequency to each ear; the part of our brain that determines which direction a sound is coming from does a kind of mental subtraction and generates the beat frequency within our brain. Then, by a process called frequency following,  our brainwave frequency “locks onto” this beat frequency and is gently guided along to the desired mind state.

So, when we need to be more energized, more relaxed, less stressed, etc. – we can easily and immediately enter the appropriate mind state through the use of binaural beats.

You don’t have to understand binaural beats in order to use them to your great advantage. To create desired states-of-mind, all you need is a way to guide your brain waves to specific frequency ranges.

How much better would your life be…
If you could effortlessly CONTROL YOUR STATE OF MIND?
Now you can be more energetic, focused, creative, relaxed, etc….

Binaural Beats – A Life-Changing Technology

July 17th, 2011

Binaural beats are sequences of auditory tones designed to have a specific effect on the brain. Over the next several months (maybe years) we will be discussing binaural technology in detail. But, in the meantime, I’m extremely excited to finally have this site on binaural beat technology up and running. It’s been a dream of mine for some time.

binauralYa – can you tell? I’m thoroughly enjoying this – hope you are too. Now for a brief introduction to binaural beats technology:

Your brain has a characteristic frequency (or wavelength) which varies with your general mood or demeanor. Certain frequency ranges are associated with sleep, others with relaxation and still others with an active, alert mind.

Binaural beats are designed to sync up with your brain’s frequency – to get your brain to keep pace with its frequency. Then, the binaural beat signals are slowly varied – and, once captured, your brain follows. The technical name for this pacing and leading process is entrainment.

Depending upon the design of the binaural beat sequence, the binaural beats may pull you down into deep relaxation or energize you to help you face a difficult task. Many binaural beat sequences are available to achieve a variety of desired results.

Stay tuned… Much more information on binaural beats, sound and light machines, binaural mp3 tracks and entrainment to come in following months…

Hope this little bit has piqued your interest…

Theta Binaural Audio Programs Can Help You to Induce a Meditative State

July 15th, 2011

theta binaural beats contemplateBinaural beats are a modern technology based on principles discovered early in the 19th century. Theta binaural audio sessions operate mainly in the 5-8 Hz range and can be used to lead the brain into a deep meditative state. Theta binaural beats programs can be used either alone or in conjunction with your favorite conventional meditation techniques.

Our minds operate at differing speeds or “frequencies”. As common sense would tell us, our mind runs at higher frequencies when it is more active and lower frequencies when it is relaxed or calm. The four commonly recognized cerebral frequency ranges are beta, alpha, theta and delta.

Our brains are in the high-speed beta range (15-39 Hz) when we are actively using our brains for complex thinking tasks such as reading, problem-solving or performing complex logic. When the dominant frequency is in the alpha range (9-14 Hz), we feel calm, centered and focused. We may even be in a light meditative state of mind. When our brain is operating in the range of 5-8 Hz, our brains are operating at an extremely “slowed down” level. We have entered the theta zone – a range conducive to deep physical and mental relaxation states. This state is useful for deep meditation, creativity tasks and even certain sleep states. Delta (1-4 Hz) is the slowest range in which our brain operates. This range is associated with deep sleep, unconsciousness and some very, very deep relaxation states.

Brain function researchers have discovered long ago that the theta brainwave frequency range is the zone that the brain naturally operates in when it has been placed into a state of deep meditation. Thus, entering a deep meditative state automatically places the brain into the theta operating range. Since theta brainwave frequencies are inextricably tied together with a state of deep meditation, it makes sense that the reverse is also true: leading the brain into the theta frequency operating range will automatically place the brain in a deep meditative state.

This is the principle behind theta binaural audio programs. Through a scientific principle called entrainment, binaural programs gently lead our brains to a desired frequency. By applying two slightly-differing audio tones to each of our two ears, we cause our brain to internally create a third tone (sometimes called a binaural beat frequency). As you would suspect, theta binaural beats programs are designed to guide the brain to a theta frequency range.

Theta binaural beats audio programs can be a great aid to our meditation practice whether used alone or with other meditation methods. Of course we must do our part. Binaural beats audio sessions will not work for us if we do not allow them to. However, if we make an effort to “cooperate” with the technology we will find that it will cooperate with us by allowing us to easily place our brains in the proper state of consciousness that we require for deep, relaxed meditation.

Use Theta Binaural Beats to Relax Your Mind and Body

July 11th, 2011

binaural beats beachNeed to change your state of mind? Binaural beats are audio tones designed to create specific mind states for the user. They work by inducing your brain into producing specific brainwave frequencies. For instance, they may be used to “speed your brain up” to make you alert, motivated and energized. Or, they may be used to “slow down your brain” to make you relaxed, or even sleepy. Theta binaural beats are designed specifically to put us into a “super-relaxed” state of consciousness – a state great for creativity, learning or just plain relaxing.

Binaural beats work by presenting two slightly different audio frequencies to each of our brain hemispheres. The mechanism in our brain that normally calculates which direction a sound is coming from resolves these two frequencies and produces a third frequency. This frequency, sometimes called an “entrainment frequency” guides your mind quickly and effortlessly into a desired mind state.

Theta binaural beats are in a low brainwave frequency range (5-8 Hz). As such, they have a tendency to calm your brain down. Years of brain function research has shown us that the theta brainwave state is associated with learning, enhanced creativity, dreaming, and relaxation.

Theta frequencies can be a great aid to learning. As we all know, it is very difficult to concentrate or focus on anything when our mind is racing. We need to calm ourselves down and slow our minds down before learning can take place. The low-frequency theta brainwave frequency range does just that. It brings the mind down to a state in which it can operate efficiently.

For the same reason, the theta frequency range greatly increases our capacity for creative thought. We all know that we have bad ideas when we are panicked, hurried or excited. In order to produce creative ideas, we need to let our mind relax and “let go”.

The theta brainwave frequencies are some of the lower frequencies that our brain naturally runs at. Through a process called “brainwave entrainment”, theta binaural beats can be used to easily and rapidly induce our minds to run in at theta frequencies. Leading our brain to run at these frequencies puts our mind into a more resourceful state – a state suitable for increased learning, improved creativity, and alert relaxation.

Three Types of Meditation Sounds That Can Enhance Your Meditation Practice

December 13th, 2010

meditation sounds

“…our state of mind is dependent upon the frequency at which our brain waves are operating…”

Most people who meditate have probably tried out one or more meditation sounds tapes, CDs or downloads. I first learned to meditate more than three decades ago and I personally own a fair-sized library of meditation sounds programs.

When I look through my pile of tapes, CDs (and my four light and sound machines), I find that I can divide meditation sounds programs into three distinct types.

1. Guided Meditation

This type of audio program is strictly instructional. Essentially, a meditation teacher walks you through a meditation session. They give instructions to first guide you into a meditative state and then to take you deeper. And after they assume you’ve had enough time to reach a meditative state, there is either a period of silence or silence with occasional reminders to bring your wandering mind back to your meditation. After your meditation period is over, they gently bring you back up.

That’s basically it for guided meditation programs. Yes, the instruction is given with a soothing, calming voice – and, of course that adds to the experience. But basically, it’s just talk – a series of instructions.

2. Meditation Music or Nature Sounds

Meditation music and nature sounds both offer the same thing. Predictable, rhythmic, non-intrusive sound. They create background sounds that generally serve two purposes. 1) they mask out extraneous noise. With a constant wall of sound playing in both ears, we are less likely to be distracted by the air conditioner kicking on or a plane flying over our house. 2) The soothing rhythm helps us enter the meditation state. We all know the effect that music or the sound of rain on the roof can have on our mood – summed up by this quote we’ve all heard: “Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast…”

3. Binaural Beats

This type of recording uses modern technology to lead our brain waves to specific frequency ranges. These types of audio sessions work by presenting different frequency tones to each ear. The “circuitry” in our brain that is normally used to determine sound directionality, uses the two frequencies to form a third frequency inside the brain. This third frequency is the binaural beat frequency and it does not exist outside the brain. It is completely synthesized within the brain. And since it is formed within the brain, it is very easy (through a process called entrainment) for our brain waves to lock onto this frequency. And, since our state of mind is dependent upon the frequency at which our brain waves are operating, we have a tendency to fall into the desired mind state.

So, in other words, if a binaural beat is generated in the low alpha or theta ranges, the entrainment process will cause our brain to easily and effortlessly follow this frequency and fall into a meditative state due to the entrainment process.

Of course, these different types can be combined. Binaural beats are often mixed with music or nature sounds. In this manner, the binaural beats quickly lead your mind to the desired state with the music and nature sounds supporting the effect. The combination of these two elements is not only extremely powerful – but also very pleasant and entertaining.

Whether you are an experienced meditator or just beginning, binaural beats meditation sounds combined with music or nature recordings can quickly and easily get you on the road to a fruitful meditation practice.

Meditation Sounds – A Path to Wisdom

December 9th, 2010

meditation soundsMeditation sounds are a great way to gain clarity in your thoughts. Meditation sounds can be used alone, or to augment your meditation practice. Either way, with a minimum of effort, you will quickly enter a state of mind where your thoughts become their clearest.

We all know the difference between wisdom and knowledge. We may not be able to explicitly define the difference – but we know it when we see it. We know when someone is smart, knowledgeable and intelligent. But there is a fundamental difference – a feeling you get when you spend time around someone who is wise.

Let’s start at the bottom. It goes without saying that we can all easily spot someone who’s an “idiot” or a “fool”. They’re the ones throwing lit firecrackers at their friends for “fun”; driving 103 mph down the freeway on a motorcycle or bullying their wife, children and their dog. They do what they feel like. Their ego is in control most of the time. For some, this is just a stage and is simply a sign of immaturity (many college students are an example of this). Sadly, for others, the situation is permanent.

Someone who is intelligent has most likely gathered a lot of information. They know things. They have answers, facts, names, dates and lots of advice. And, more than just a good memory, intelligent people have a mind that can organize these bits of information and make connections between them.

Someone who has wisdom is at a completely different level. Wise people are intelligent people with an added twist.

Like the intelligent person, they have lots of information – and usually a fair amount of experience. And like the intelligent person, they can make connections between their individual bits of information. But – in addition – they also tie these bits of information together with their experience. What sets them apart from the merely intelligent is that they can (and do) apply their vast storehouse of knowledge to life situations. Their ego is not in control. Their intellect is.

We all know people who are “intelligent idiots”. They have information but no wisdom. They are “book smart” and “life stupid”. Doctors who smoke are examples of this. They have vast, intimate knowledge of the consequences of smoking. They have lots of experience from seeing the effects on their patients. But they are ruled by emotions and impulses instead of their intellect that “knows better”. And so they smoke. Book smart and life stupid.

meditation soundsWise people are different. Book smart  and life smart. They tie their knowledge together with their life experiences. And when someone can make the tough decisions and stand by them based on knowledge, good information and a consideration of probable consequences – I call that character. Wise people have character. That’s one reason we’re all drawn to them.

Wisdom only comes with having a clear mind. Wisdom only comes with periodically slowing down and “going inside” – with doing regular analysis of life situations. Wisdom only comes with thought – deep thought – contemplation. And for contemplation to occur and be fruitful, we must be in the proper state of mind. That is one of the main reasons we meditate.

One thing that can help us attain this resourceful type of mind is the use of binaural beats audio files. Binaural beats files use today’s technology to entice the brain into desired brainwave frequency regions. More than just music, these meditation sounds actually create a precise frequency within our brain. Then, through two synergistic scientific process: entrainment and frequency-following, our brains “lock onto” this frequency and fall into the desired mind state.

Crystal Clear Mind is a binaural beats download designed to help you reach an exceptionally deep state of mind. This audio program elegantly uses both the alpha and theta frequency ranges to bring your mind to a enhanced state of focused concentration and then down to the mind-state of intuitive awareness.

Wisdom builds from a clear mind. Crystal Clear Mind can instantly help you begin to develop that clarity of thought.

Wouldn’t clarity of thought enhance your life?

Use Meditation Sounds for a State of Deep Concentration

December 8th, 2010

meditation soundsSometimes it’s easy to concentrate – other times it’s not. Now, with the help of meditation sounds mp3 downloads, you can enter deep concentration states at will.

Why do we meditate? Do we meditate so that we can sit quietly for a period of time. Do we meditate to relax – to disengage – to escape?

Yes, those are some of the reasons that many of us maintain a regular meditation practice. We can escape to a quiet, tranquil, peaceful place and “get away from it all”.

But, in reality, that is not the true goal of meditation practice.

Don’t get me wrong. There is great value in escaping to a quiet place and attempting to clear your mind – especially if the rest of your life is hurried, hectic and stressful (as most lives are today). But the real purpose of meditation is to acquire a skill – the ability to quiet the mind so that we can focus – to cultivate the ability to concentrate deeply. Yes, that’s right. The purpose of meditation is to learn to quiet and calm the mind so that we can maintain a clear mind UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

Yes, we do our meditation practice in a quiet place where we are undisturbed because we are not yet good at it. As we become better – through years of practice – we can learn to handle more and more interruptions. The first time we try meditation, our concentration may be broken by a creaking sound in the house. On day 22, we can concentrate right through the house creaking – but when the air conditioner kicks in, we lose it. On day 72, the air conditioner is no problem. But a dog bark outside breaks our concentration.

The goal (perhaps in YEAR 41) is to be able to sit quietly, meditate and maintain concentration; even with the TV on, kids running around you, and a fly crawling across your lips.

That is the real purpose of meditation – to develop that strength of focus and concentration in you.

Did you ever wonder why meditation – such a peaceful, calm, relaxing activity is practiced so often by martial artists? It seems like a contradiction that a martial artist – someone skilled in the art and practice of inflicting injury – would practice something as peaceful as meditation.

It is for the very reason I stated above. The martial artist practices meditation to train his mind to remain calm in chaos.

When we get excited or scared, our heart rate increases, our thinking becomes hurried (or even panicked) and our fine motor skills go away. The more excited we become, the more we need to rely on gross motor movement. For a martial artist, that means that all the fancy intricate manipulations and techniques are no longer possible. During high stress, only the simplest of techniques will be available in the artist’s arsenal. When a martial artist allows his mind to get excited, he gives up much of his advantage.

To avoid this, the martial artist practises meditation – quieting the mind in order to hold focus and concentration. He does this – not for the peace it brings during meditation practice – but for the skill he acquires – the ability to maintain a calm mind in the midst of chaos.

It is the same skill we need to have when trying to concentrate on writing a report while sitting in an open cubicle at work , or trying to talk on the phone while the kids scream in the background or, negotiating a new car deal in spite of the stress we feel.

meditation soundsBut how many of us have 41 years (or 10 years – or even ONE year) to develop the ability to concentrate clearly?

When 4th century monks and martial artists needed to cook something, their only choice was to build a fire and hang the food over it. Today we have convection ovens, conduction ovens and microwaves. Technology has made our lives so much easier.

Years of meditation practice was the only way available to those same 4th century monks and martial artists if they wanted to attain a calm, focused mind. But today, technology, once again; makes our lives so much easier.

Today – if you can push a “play” button, you can achieve deep concentration states in less than 30 minutes.

The Deep Concentration mp3 meditation sounds audio file will gently guide your brain waves to the low Alpha state – the ideal region for focused concentration. You will be astounded how quickly your mind becomes relaxed, tranquil and focused. Without the endless onslaught of inner dialog and mental distractions, the mind is free to focus inwardly to the thoughts that you need to concentrate on.

Deep Concentration operates in the Alpha brainwave region so that the brain is calm and relaxed – but still alert. Deep Concentration does not put you to sleep or make you drowsy. It simply causes a state of “relaxed alertness”. This is the same mind state you are in when you are “in the zone”.

After listening to these meditation sounds, you will be ready to tackle those tough mental tasks. Your mind will be clear, relaxed, focused and alert.

The next time you need a completely focused mind – when your mind must be calm in the midst of chaos – put on your headphones and push “play”. After listening to a session of Deep Concentration your new, focused, resourceful mind state will allow you to face any challenging creative or mental task that life hands you.

Do you have a spare 41 years to wait for a clear, focused mind?
Today, you don’t even need to wait 41 minutes…

Meditation Sounds – Ennora Binaural Beats Music

December 5th, 2010

meditation sounds

Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what holds you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom.”
Gautama Siddharta

Now You Can Learn to Meditate Quickly

I learned to meditate more than three decades ago – and it wasn’t easy. It was very difficult learning to get into the proper mind-state and staying there. Of course, as you know, that’s the difficulty in meditation practice. The mind always wants to hijack your consciousness and carry it off somewhere else… Anywhere… Anywhere but here – in this place and in this moment.

Today there is a new technological development called binaural beats meditation sounds which can work immediately to relax your mind and place it into a deep meditative state and keep it there.

Whether you are just beginning or, like me, have been meditating for years; binaural beats meditation sounds can radically enhance your meditation experience.

Meditation was developed literally centuries ago. Difficult as it was to master, it was the only way known to put the mind into such a quiet, relaxed and focused state. Well, it’s not 1234 or 1793 or even 1953 anymore. This is the 21st century and powerful technologies are now available that can radically accelerate the meditative process.

1st Century East Meets 21st Century West

meditation soundsIf you wanted to reach a meditative state in 500 A.D., you couldn’t just slap on a pair of headphones and relax. Today you can. With binaural beats meditation sounds, it’s that easy. If you can hit a “play” button, you can reach a deep, relaxing, meditative brain state. Just simply listening to these audio files while you meditate will drive you into a deeper state than you’ve ever experienced before.

When I first learned to meditate, I had help from guided meditation audio tapes. In effect, these were instructional tapes which guided you as you practiced meditation. They gave periodic instructions and gentle reminders (and possibly soothing music) to help you enter the meditative state.

The meditation sounds audio files I am talking about are completely different. They rely on a modern technology called binaural beats to scientifically guide your mind to the desired mental state.

Binaural Beats Brain Entrainment Explained

It’s all about brainwave frequencies. In many ways, your brain is like a computer. When a computer has a lot to do, it executes many instructions per second. When it is idle, it executes far fewer instructions per second.

Your brain does the same thing. When you are stressed, scared or extremely active, your brainwave frequencies are in the beta (high frequency range). When you are relaxed, day dreaming or asleep; your brain is operating in the lower frequency ranges (alpha, theta and delta).

Many years of research has shown that he brains of experienced meditators operate in these alpha, theta and delta regions during deep meditation.

Binaural Beats Recreate these Exact Brainwave Frequency Ranges for You

Binaural meditation sounds work by presenting two distinct frequencies to each ear. The two frequencies differ by a small amount. The portion of our brain which uses input from both ears to tell us which direction a sound is coming from, “subtracts” these two frequencies from each other to produce a third frequency called a beat frequency.

After a short while, our brainwave frequency will “lock on” to this beat frequency. And if the beat frequency is in the alpha, theta or delta state, our brain will follow that frequency and enter into that relaxed, focused state.

It’s that easy. And it makes sense.

Improve Your Meditation Practice Today…

I have been using binaural beats for the past 15 years – through the use of binaural audio files and a light and sound machine. I use them whenever I need to change my state of mind. If I am groggy and need to be alert, I use a binaural beats session. When I want to relax or enter a meditative state, another binaural beats session. Or, if I have trouble getting to sleep – that’s right – binaural beats.

I’ve used binaural beats for more than 15 years. Isn’t it time you tried them?

Meditation Songs – Combining Binaural Beats with Soothing Music to GO DEEPER

December 2nd, 2010

binaural songsWhy use meditation songs? Will listening to music allow you to meditate more deeply? Yes it can – but only if you select appropriate meditation songs.

We all know from everyday life that sounds have an effect on us – and they can affect our mental state.

Most people don’t like to live near an airport or next to railroad tracks because the sound is annoying and abrasive. Some people like to listen to music to help their meditation studies. A great idea – but Metallica, Megadeth or Avenged Sevenfold would probably not be good choices. Whether you do or do not like these musical choices, the fact remains is that the type of sound these bands produce – in this context - is not appropriate. It’s loud, invasive and distracting. It is “in your face” music. It demands to be listened to. Not a good choice when you are trying to direct your focus inwardly.

On the other hand, we’ve all had the experience of “zoning out” when we’re exposed to soft, periodic sounds – the drone of car wheels on the road, running water, the hum of our air conditioner – or binaural beats programs. These types of sounds gently lull our minds into trance.

That’s right. Sounds can affect our state-of-cousciouness. And carefully designed meditation songs can help us reach deeper meditation levels.

Binaural Beats Meditation Music Enhance the Meditation Experience Through Three Different Mechanisms

meditation songs1. In order to obtain the full effect of binaural beats entrainment, the program must be listened to with headphones. Depending on the design of the headphones, external ambient distracting noises will be sharply attenuated – or blocked out completely.

meditation songs2. We all know the effects that music can have on us – if we are receptive to it. The music or nature sounds included in the binaural songs will serve to relax and quiet the mind and put it in a more relaxed and receptive state. It will also make the experience more pleasant by “taking the edge off” the harshness of the binaural beats tones.

meditation songs3. The binaural beats tones will lead the frequency of our brain waves to a relaxed and meditative mind state. Binaural beats work on the principle of entrainment. In other words, the brain has a natural tendency to “lock on” to frequencies presented to it if they are within the normal brainwave frequency range. And, using binaural beats to slow down brainwave frequencies leads the brain into deeper meditative states.

The Faster Easier Way to Deeper Meditative Mind States

So, meditation songs can be great for enhancing your meditation practice – if the correct type of music is selected. Binaural meditation sounds are great to add to an existing meditation practice or to be used alone.

Use Binaural Music to Increase Your I.Q.

November 26th, 2010

Binaural musicCan binaural music really increase your IQ? The research implies that it can…

In the mid-1990s, Richard Cauley Kennerly performed a binaural music efficacy experiment using 50 college students. The experiment was a double-blind experiment in which the students were randomly split into two groups. One group was a control group. This group was asked to listen to ordinary instrumental music.

The second group was the experimental group. This group listened to the very same instrumental music – but this time, the music was mixed with binaural tones.

Following the audio listening sessions, the students were administered a test. When results from the two groups were compared, the experimental group exhibited test scores statistically higher than the control group.

To me this is an extremely significant result. This tells me that binaural music can influence our ability to learn, retain and recall information. It means we can use binaural music as tool to improve our mental functioning – and for me, that’s especially useful tool to have when I’m fatigued, nervous or stressed.

But will it really improve my IQ? I don’t know. And, to tell the truth, it really doesn’t matter.

If I can have a tool that allows my brain to function better – a tool that allows me to learn, retain and recall information more efficiently – a tool that will help me control my moods and states-of-mind; I don’t really care if it makes my IQ score go up.

Maybe that’s just me. Because the most important thing to me is performance. And that means being able to get things done – efficiently, accurately and in a timely manner. What’s most important to me in the “real world” are results – not test results – not IQ test scores – real world tangible, usable, life-enhancing results. As some of you might say – results you can “take to the bank”.

And binaural music gives me that. I’ve been using binaural beats technology for more than 15 years. It gives me a tool to help manage my mind. And isn’t that the key to success? If we can manage our minds, we can manage our lives.
